Newcastle vs. Arsenal: Preview, Predictions and Stats for Round 10!
Arsenal heads off to St James’ Park for round 10 of the Premier League after a hard-earned point on Emirates against Liverpool. Playing without William Saliba, Ricardo Calafiori and Martin Odegaard, drawing with Liverpool might seem disappointing, but it is an admirable achievement. Add Gabriel Maghalhaes and Jurrien Timber to that injury list, ahead of a series of challenging games, and things are looking hard to navigate for Mikel Arteta.
It does not look bright for Newcastle either. They have not had a win in the Premier League in the last five rounds. Their latest victory came against Wolverhampton back in September with a 2-1 win at Molineux Stadium. One thing going for the Magpies is Nick Pope’s performance. He is the third goalkeeper in the league with 4,4 saves per game. We will see if Newcastle will also depend on Nick Pope to stop the Gunners!

Current Form and Standings
Arsenal sits in the 3rd spot of the table with 18 points, five points away from Manchester City. They have only one loss in the Premier League, which came against Bournemouth in a 2-0 defeat. The Gunners are in substantial form, with the loss against Bournemouth being the only spot on their record.
On the other side, Newcastle sits near the middle of the table before Round 10. The Magpies are currently sitting in the 12th spot, with 12 points. They have 3 across the board, with three losses, draws and defeats. Newcastle does not look very well, being without a win in their last 5 games.
Newcastle is Plagued By Individual Errors
Newcastle has only conceded 10 goals so far. This ranks them high in the table in the 4th slot on par with Arsenal and Tottenham. The real question is: how many goals would Newcastle actually concede without those straightforward individual errors?
Newcastle had so far in the season four individual errors leading to a goal. Two by Nick Pope, the most recent one being Cole Palmer’s goal, where he could have done much more to stop it. Then another one each by Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes. This makes them one of the top teams conceding goals from individual errors. Newcastle has also made 10 errors leading to shots, the second highest in the league, and ranks second in times dispossessed. So Eddy Howe needs to tighten up his team and bring in some focus for Newcastle to compete against The Gunners.
Arsenal’s Busy Schedule and Injuries
Arsenal is in the middle of an extremely demanding series of games. Meeting Liverpool at Emirates before heading to Saint James’ park. After that, two excruciating games, one against Inter Milan in the Champions League, and then Chelsea in the Premier League. Mikel Arteta has to navigate through this schedule without Martin Odegaard, Ricardo Calafiori, Jurrien Timber and Gabriel Magalhaes. Basically, without most of his back line.
This might prove dangerous, as Newcastle is keen on trying to break the lines with through balls, and experimenting with inexperienced players like Lewis Skelly might backfire like it did against Liverpool. Arteta will put his faith into Saka to continue with his excellent form and provide that missing creative spark brought by Odegaard. The winger has seven assists so far, the most in the league. Lewis Hall will need to step up and close the space on the wing to limit Saka.
Newcastle vs. Arsenal Predictions
Arsenal are the favourites in this game, with the OPTA Supercomputer giving them a 47,8% chance of coming up on top. It is not surprising, giving Newcastle’s recent form, and historically, they have won only four times against Arsenal in the Premier League. This game will probably not be a goal fest, as six out of the last seven games in this matchup had less than 2,5 goals.
- Arsenal to win or draw: Given that Newcastle has a 27,1% chance to get the three points, backing up a Gunner victory or draw is quite safe
- Newcastle Under 1,5 Goals: So far, Newcastle has scored more than one goal on two occasions. In their vicotry against Wolverhampton and the season debut against Tottenham
- Arsenal Under 2,5 Goals: You might consider this one, since Arsenal has scored more than two goals on two occasions as well. Against Leicester and Southampton.
